How To Start A Blog in 4 Simple Steps
1. Buy a domain
Hopefully by now you have thought about what you want your URL to be. If not, you need to decide before going forward.
There is always the option of registering one domain for free when you sign up for your hosting package {which will be explained soon}. I would recommend not giving one company COMPLETE control over the two most important parts of your site. We always recommend to register your domain with a separate company from which you purchased your hosting package.
There are several choices when it comes to registering a domain. Our top pick is GoDaddy. It will cost you between $10 and $20 per year to register your domain. Also, keep in mind that this must be renewed annually.
1. Go to GoDaddy.com to register your new domain {click the link and it will appear in a new window}.
2. Enter your desired domain.
3. Follow the prompts.
*Sidenote: I do not recommend using them for hosting. I have heard many not-so-lovely reviews on their hosting service. Strictly use them for domain purchase only.
*Sidenote #2: There are usually discount codes available for GoDaddy. Before you complete your online purchase make sure that you do a google search for “GoDaddy.com coupon code”.
2. Now it’s time to pick a host
We would recommend Bluehost or Lunar Pages for your hosting company. There is also Liquid Web. We have used all three companies for our own blogs and have been extremely pleased. I don’t want to overwhelm you with too many choices so for the purposes of these tutorials I picked Bluehost and Lunar Pages.
Dollars and Roses is hosted on Lunar Pages. One of our other sites, Good Financial Cents, started out being hosted on Bluehost.
The price is always cheaper the more you pay in advance. So, if possible, try and pay for your yearly hosting fee up front. It will save you money.
How to purchase hosting {Bluehost}
1. Go to Bluehost {click the link and it will appear in a new window}
2. Click “Sign Up Now”
3. Enter your domain
*Sidenote: See where it says “I Need a Domain Name”? This is what I was referring to earlier when I said that hosting companies will allow you to register one domain fro free. I would not recommend this option.
4. Enter your account and billing information.
Make sure and input your personal account information as well as billing information.
5. Choose your hosting package.
You have the choice of 12 months, 24 months or 36 months based on your preference. Again, the longer time frame the cheaper it will be.
Once you have chosen an “Account Plan”, go ahead and uncheck all of the boxes {SiteLock Domain Security, Site Backup Pro, Search Engine Jumpstart}.
Click “next”.
You will receive a confirmation in your email inbox.
This step is DONE. Skip the next section which shows you how to purchase hosting from Lunar Pages.
How to purchase hosting {Lunar Pages}
1. Go to Lunar Pages {click the link and it will appear in a new window}
2. Click “Basic Hosting”
3. Click “Learn More About Basic Web Hosting”
4. Click “Buy Now”
5. Enter Contact Information and choose “I already have a domain”
Remember you have already registered your domain with GoDaddy.
6. Choose your hosting package
You have the choice of 3 months, 6 months, 12 months, 24 months, or 60 months based on your preference. Again, the longer time frame the cheaper it will be.
It will ask you if you want to add any additional features. You do not need to.
7. Click “Continue”
Change the nameservers on your domain
Here is a short {and easy to follow} video tutorial on how to change the name server on your domain with GoDaddy.
3a. Uploading WordPress to the server {Bluehost}
1. Log in to your Bluehost account {you should have received an email with your user id/password information after purchasing your hosting package}.
2. Click the icon that reads “Simple Scripts” under the “Software/Serives” in your cPanel. You may also simply click on the “WordPress” icon to go straight to the install page.
3. Click “WordPress” under “Blogs”.

4. Click “Install”.
5. Specify what domain you want Worpress to be installed on.
6. Choose your “Advanced Options” {if you want to}.
7. Agree to Bluehost Terms of Service
8. Click “Complete”.
WordPress has been uploaded to your domain. Skip the next section which shows you how to upload WordPress to the server using Lunar Pages.
3b. Uploading WordPress to the server {Lunar Pages}
1. Log in to your Lunar Pages account {you should have received an email with your user id/password information after purchasing your hosting package}.
2. Go to “Control Panel”.
3. Click on “cPanel”.
4. Click on “Softaculous”.
5. Click on “WordPress – install”.
6. Enter your information and change the admin user id and password to one that you create.
*Make sure your user id/password are very unique.
7. Click “Install”.
4. How to choose a WordPress Theme
There are tons of different “free” themes that you can choose from. If you are trying to save money then I suggest just choosing a free theme.
We use a premium {meaning that it’s paid for} theme. There are two that we would recommend: Thesis and Genesis. All but one of our websites runs on Thesis. We have the most experience and knowledge in Thesis. However, I have heard wonderful things about Genesis. The advantage to a premium theme is the ability to customize your site the way you want it.
If you decide to go with Thesis it will prompt you to choose between Thesis 2.0 or Thesis 1.8.5. I would recommend downloading Thesis 1.8.5 {the Basic version}. It’s much easier to use than 2.0.
*Update: With the release of Thesis 2.0 we would recommend going with Genesis. Thesis 2.0 is not user friendly. We are looking at switching our sites to Genesis.
That’s it! To log in to your new site go to:
http://yourdomain.com/wp-admin
Example: http://dollarsandroses.com/wp-admin
Enter your unique user id/password

The most important thing about blogging is just to get started. Your post systematically takes away all of the excuses. If you want to have a blog go for; but you’ve got to love it. It is work and a lot of it at that. If your heart’s not in, it won’t work. Thanks for the road map and helping so many other bloggers like myself who respect your blog.
You forgot to add that you need to pay 200$ upfront for hosting. So overall blog creation cost you at least 210$.
@ Paul That’s right. I think when I first started blogging I signed up for 2 years of hosting so the cost was more up front, but cheaper on a per month basis.
Wow thanks for the breakdown! My eyes usually glaze over when reading how-to’s about blogging but this was very easy to understand
Hi Jeff,
This is very helpful, thanks! I clicked onto your link for Thesis 1.85 but it doesn’t work? I checked out the Thesis DIYsite, and it doesn’t look like they give you the option to pick 1.8.5 anymore? Thanks, Lisa
@ Lisa Thanks for the heads up. Yes, this is a bummer. I need to re-evaluate if Thesis is where we want to refer people for new bloggers. As of now, I have upgraded to Thesis 2.0 yet and either have most of my blogging buddies.
Hi Jeff,
I found this through Mandy’s blog, this is amazingly helpful! I’ve been thinking about starting a blog for a while but I don’t know that I have that much to talk about! What inspired you and Mandy to start your blogs?
Good Morning,
What a wonderful resource this is! Thank you. I am excited to finally start my blog. Lord knows I have so much to say! Do you have a link available for Genesis, or did I miss it?
Have a wonderful Monday!
My husband and I own our own drain cleaning business (Plumbing stuff). I am trying to get the website done, and am doing it through wordpress under the blue host site. I am wondering what you think is best for a website that isn’t going to be updated regularly. It will be more like something that is permanent with very few updates of pictures and videos. Does that make sense? What would you recommend?
@ Jill
I would definitely still suggest a Wordpress blog for this. You can check out by my personal business site: http://jeffrosefinancial.com/ and my firm site: http://www.alliancewealthmgmt.com/ as examples.
They are both wordpress blogs that I never add new content to.
I would encourage him though to take pictures on job sites and demonstrate what he can do for his clients. The more he can show people what he does, the more likely they will hire him.
Heads up, I’m a rookie in the truest sense of the word when it comes to this. I followed most of what you have here, but have Host Gator as a hosting service. I did the WordPress “thing”, my question is however, there seems to be Wordpress.org and Wordpress.com, are they the same thing? Also you said they have great support, but I’m not finding that, mostly I just see forums, am I in the wrong spot?
And last but not least, I was really hoping for the “ok, begin blogging!” but my blog doesn’t look right. How do you put the Pinterest, Facebook, Google, Email buttons on it? I couldn’t find that here.
Anyway thank you though for these great tips! -Matt
Hi jeff,
I have a very stupid question, but am very new to this! I have bought my own domain, but have started my blog on Wordpress. If I now go and get my domain hosted eg through bluehost, will what I have already blogged get transferred across? And then do I still blog onto the Wordpress format? Thanks! Your blog is truly amazing your wife and yourself are an inspiration!
Thanks!
@ Madonna You’ll have to manually import all your previous blog posts to your new domain. When you login into your blog, go to “Tools” and then “Export” from your existing blog. Once you get Wordpress setup with your new host, just import the ZIP while and all your old posts should be there.
And yes, your new blog will have almost the exact same backend that you currently use now. Super easy!
Hi Jeff,
I have absolutely NO experience blogging (I found you through Pinterest), but I would love to learn more about how to make income blogging so I can be a stay at home mom. My question is, what’s the biggest difference between creating a blog on a domain/host that you have to purchase verses just blogging on free blog sites (i.e. blogspot.com)? Is that all because there is no way for you to earn income through advertisers on those free sites? Any information would be of great help! Thanks.
@ Rachel The best way I can explain it is like renting or owning your house. Let’s say you’re renting an apartment and you put in your own money painting it, adding new carpet, putting in new cabinets, etc. The apartment looks great while you’re staying there but you’ll never be able to sell it or rent it out to a future owner because it’s not yours. That’s the same concept of not owning your own domain.
When you buy your own domain, it’s yours. You have the freedom to run all sorts of ads (some of the free ones don’t allow certain ads) and most importantly its yours. Even better its much cheaper to buy your own domain and hosting package than a brand new house.
If you’re not sure if blogging is for you, you can start on one of the free platforms to test it out. If you quickly realize you do like it, I would suggest to buy your own domain sooner than later. It’s fairly easy to move your site over from a free blogging platform to your own (we actually have a post that shows you how).
Hope that helps!
Hi Jeff & Mandy, love your blogs… I found Mandy on Pinterest and you are the cutest thing ever so I had to read it! Thanks to you guys, I just started setting up a blog (which I have thought about doing for a while.) You guys are the best!
I just have a couple of questions (right now, lol.) Are all of the articles/posts from someone other than yourself, friends or guest hosts? What is the etiquette for asking to repost an article or ask a person to guest? What about book excerpts or reviews, newspaper or magazine articles online or otherwise? I’m not going to plagiarize anything but can see that I might not always have something original to post. What are your thoughts? Thanks so much!
@ Pamela
Congrats on starting your blog! Very exciting.
Regarding content that is already published on the web, you should never copy and paste another person’s work. If you are using a quote from a post/article, proper etiquette is to link back giving the original author full credit.
Typically, if you come across an article you like, it’s always best to give your own summary of the article. That way you’re offering your own idea on the topic while also sharing an article that you think your readers would also enjoy.
Hope that helps!
I did this step by step but I am having some trouble. I bought Genesis. I only see one layout. Maybe I misunderstood but I thought that I only had to enter my information on to premade layouts.
Can you be a little more specific on the issues you are having?
Hi. This is very interesting. I’m a stay at home wife and mother of a 3 month old. I live in a small town where jobs are hard to come by even if I did attend college. My husband is doing electrical work for a small company and the pay is minimal. I have been searching for ways to make money (even just enough to make ends meet) as I stay home with my son, Gavin. Unfortunately, I know squat about computers… is there anyway someone can explain in depth about blogging? Maybe some guidance to see if this is something I should try?
Thanks in advance,
Amanda
Hi Amanda! Blogging is definitely a great way to make extra income; however, it is definitely not something that happens quickly. If you are looking for a quick way to make extra money than blogging may not be your route. It took me over 6 months before I made my first $50. I don’t want to discourage you, but just want to be honest with you. It does take a lot of time and effort (and little to no pay at the beginning).
Hi! OK, I don’t know if I’m just having a major blonde moment or what… I got through all of the steps and then go to log in via http://www.domainname.com/wp-admin and it brings me to the WordPress log in. What do I do at this point? I went to wordpress.org and created an account and the log in/password they sent doesn’t work there. Is it a username/password that I already have? Help!!! Thanks so much!
@ Karlie When you installed Wordpress onto your domain from Bluehost, did you create a username and password there? You would have created it through your host, not through the .org site.
If you can’t remember, try emailing your host with the issue and they should be able reset your password. And don’t worry, I’ve done that before, too!
I figured it out… Here’s what I did just in case some of your other readers run into this problem. The install didn’t let me create a password. I requested a new password via the “forgot password” link, created a new pswd and I’m in!
Good to know I’m not alone! Haha You and your wife rock-love your blogs! I’m inspired to get going on my own. Thanks so much for the tutorial and your fast help
Thank you for this post. It really helped me and I was able to launch my new blog! You two are a great inspiration!
@ Elizabeth. Yeah! Just checked out your site. Looks great!
Thank you! I really like using Genesis. It has been relatively painless. I have also worked with support a few times and they are very quick to respond.
Thank you for all the advice! I also recently watched your video “Paralysis by Analysis” on YouTube which as inspired me to buy a a domain and just get started! It answered several of my questions and now I am excited and ready to go! Again I just want to express my thanks and give you and your wife credit for being my inspiration to starting my new blog. God Bless!
@ Ferrin You’re very welcome!
